How The App Development Industry Is Changing
For better or worse, gone are the days of the fart apps. You see; early on, smartphone apps were such a novelty that you could just about put out an app that doesn’t do squat and get a decent number of downloads.
Since this was pretty much a new medium, app design was all over the place. Some developers simply copied whatever Apple did—sometimes even Android app developers, oddly. Others put serious time and effort into providing innovative user experiences that delighted their customers. But nobody really knew what to do. It was the wild west, the app development glory days!
Now we have a much more sophisticated user base. My own kids have never known a time when there wasn’t such a thing as a mobile app. Quoth Dr. Stantz, “I worked in the private sector. They expect results!” But even more than that, we now have devices that are so much more powerful when compared to the first iPhone. The iPhone X is about five times more powerful than the first iPhone. Cellular broadband is more widely available and only getting faster. The cameras are so good that most phones come with several now. So, what does all that power get us?
To start with, all those cameras and faster processors means app development companies can start building serious Augmented Reality (AR) apps. From exploring the innards of a frog in science class (scalpel and wastebasket to puke in no longer needed!) to making a T-Rex stomp on the mean kid down the road, the possibilities for these apps are limitless!
One of the best mobile app companies in mobile app development is also changing the payments industry. I still get raised eyebrows when I wave my phone over the credit card reader to pay for something, and even gasps sometimes when I use my watch to pay. Who needs cash when you can use a $1000 phone to buy a $2.00 soda?
But all is not to be viewed through rose colored VR goggles. More and more we’re realizing that some app development companies are building apps that are taking advantage of our wonder and naïveté by gobbling up every ounce of data about us that they can. We’re realizing that these companies can know more about us than we know ourselves and that our own data can be weaponized against us for personal and political gain.
People are starting to realize that while there may be an App For That™, sometimes it’s best to put the device down and start interacting with each other the good old fashioned way. And by that of course I mean through a desktop app like Slack. We’re not animals, after all.
The reality is, while smartphone sales are starting to temper from their decade long meteoric rise, mobile application development is here to stay and app development companies are only going to continue to come up with new and innovative ideas to occupy our eyeballs while we wait for servers to come by and tell us we don’t have to pay them, we can use the tablet on the table.
