Inspirational Stories About App Design And Development Case Study: PuppTech, Inc.
What does it take to be a successful entrepreneur? How do you turn an idea that feels like a slam-dunk into a product that stands the test of time? One of our favorite inspirational stories is about our very own incubator client, PuppTech.
PuppTech founder and CEO William Loopesko never had a dog growing up, but he loved to hike, backpack and camp. He always thought that having a furry friend along would make the journey more enjoyable, so a few years ago he decided to get a dog. The very first week he and Clovis, his lab mix, were together, they went on a weekend camping trip together. On the way back, Loopesko had to stop for gas and to grab a quick lunch, but there was no place to eat where Clovis was also welcome. Loopesko spent the entire 20 minutes over lunch running back to the car every few minutes to check on Clovis and make sure he was comfortable.
When Loopesko returned from his trip, he asked his vet how other people handle traveling with their dogs when that type of situation arises. “I asked her how to ensure that Clovis was safe so that he could travel with me, even when the places I needed to go were not dog-friendly.” Her answer: Don’t take Clovis along.
“I couldn’t understand how it would be better for Clovis to stay home with a sitter or go to a boarding facility rather than go with me on the amazing weekend we had together, just because I needed to stop and eat on the way home. I wouldn’t give up those 3 days with him because of 20 minutes,” and so Loopesko started thinking about ways to solve the problem.
He started with trying to literally solve the problem by building a portable air conditioner out of a cooler that ran on ice. The problem is that no one wants to invest in an air conditioner company! That kind of device is really expensive to build, has a very small profit margin, and it still wasn’t really solving the problem because you wouldn’t know if it stopped running or stopped working without constantly checking on your dog.
Then it hit him: if you tell people whether they have a problem, then they can decide what to do about it. And thus, the PuppComm was born. Loopesko realized that if he built a sensor that would monitor the dog’s environment, wherever the dog went, then the information that sensor produced would empower owners everywhere to make better decisions about how and when to travel with their dogs. He hired Raika Technologies and GotAnAppIdea.com, one of the top mobile app development companies in Denver, CO, to build the IoT environment to ingest the data produced by the sensors and to develop the app that displays that data in terms that every dog owner can understand: how does my dog feel right now.
Loopesko took a bunch of turns along his journey and pivoted his idea several times before landing on the PuppComm and the BSCUIT algorithm that powers the data behind the device. But the most important part of his story is that he never gave up. He talked to lots of people, dog owners and pet industry experts alike, to discover the real problem and to find the solution that resonated with the largest audience.
