Why People Hesitate to Develop Their App Ideas

Meet Egon.  Egon is a smart guy.  He’s even good with his hands from a technical standpoint but he’s never built a mobile app or started a company in his life.  One day he thought to himself, “I have idea for an app!” but he is hesitant to do anything with it.  You might say, he’s terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought.  Entrepreneurship is scary to a guy like Egon.

We meet people like Egon all the time.  People with less technical knowledge than even Egon that need a top app development agency to help.  But they have this idea for an app in their heads that they just can’t shake.  They believe in their idea and they believe in themselves, but they don’t know where to start.  This is a very common theme so today we are tackling a few of the common concerns potential app entrepreneurs have when they come to us.

I don’t know how to prevent someone from stealing my idea
This is a big one.  People come to us and they barely even want to say anything about their app idea because they’re afraid we might steal it. (We won’t.)  What we tell them is, ideas are a dime a dozen.  The value is in the execution.  If you can get some traction with your idea then yes, someone else might come along and do the same thing.  But they probably don’t have your passion!  They don’t know the industry as well as you do. You also have a head start on them.  You’ve done the research that they’re too lazy to do.

And, if your idea is good enough to steal, it’s probably good enough to pursue, right?

I don’t know how to write code
Just like Egon, you may or may not have had exposure to writing code.  Can’t get an app without code, right?  This is true, but you can learn.  I know a ton of people who have taught themselves to code and have built very functional products, all by themselves.  It’s easier today than it has ever been.

If you don’t want to learn to code, then you can always hire one of the top app development companies to do it for you. Which brings us to…

It’s too expensive to hire someone to build it
“Sure!”, you say, “I’ll just cash in all my investments and sell my house and part of my soul to hire a developer.  No problem!”  We get it.  We have a client that went to a custom development shop who told him, “Write us a check for $400,000 and we’ll see how far we get.”  Blech!  The problem is, you are way too early in the process for a company like that.  Baby steps, baby!  Instead of spending a lot of money now, take the time to figure out what your Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is and get that built.  Even better, build a prototype to help you determine whether there is a market for your idea and who is in your target audience.

Yes, good developers cost money.  But you can approach it in a way that will allow you to generate revenue while developing your app.

I don’t know if the app developer I want to hire is any good
This is where learning a little bit about coding yourself can pay.  You may not ever become a master programmer but having some experience with it and understanding the terminology can go a long way toward helping you identify a good developer.

Also, trust your gut.  Do you have a rapport with the developer or do they come across as “Nick Burns, Your Company’s Computer Guy”?  We know guys like that.  Don’t hire them.  Instead, shop around and talk to a lot of developers and development companies.  You will quickly develop a good sense for who is good and who is not.

I don’t know if my idea is any good
How will you know if you don’t get it out there?  Put it into some people’s hands and find out first… uh, hand…s whether they like it.  Ultimately, if it solves a problem you have, then other people probably have the same problem.

There is already competition on the App Store
GOOD!  Now you know there is a market for a product like yours.  Too many people think, “Aw, someone has already done this.  I’m too late.  Shucks!”  (As an aside; not enough people say “shucks” anymore.)

Competition is good.  Go build a better product than those other guys.

I don’t know how to raise money
There you go again, putting the cart before the horse.  All in due time, young Star Wars character.  Let’s get something up and running and people paying you some money for it first.  The best time to raise money is when you’re generating revenue already.  In the mean time you can learn everything you need to know about fundraising, so you’ll be ready when the time comes.

And that time may not come, by the way.  If you can bootstrap this app idea, then you will give away a lot less (or NO) ownership in your business in exchange for investment funding.

I’m not good at app design
Remember MySpace?  The pages people built on that are proof enough that most people aren’t good at design, period.  But that’s ok!  That’s what professional designers are for.  If you’re not good at app design, then you can hire a designer or design company who is to help you out.

In closing, the thought of diving into building an app can be daunting and scary but that’s what makes it so much fun!  As they say, the comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.  So, get out of your comfort zone and go grow your app idea!  What do you have to lose?
