Why Do People Download Apps?
Like fingerprints, no two people’s phone are alike when it comes to which mobile apps are installed. Sure, everybody has Facebook and Instagram. Everybody in China is using 微信 (WeChat) to talk to one another. My kids spend more watching other people play games on YouTube than they do playing the games themselves, which is something that, for the life of me, I still haven’t figured out.
With nearly three million apps in Apple’s App Store, and nearly as many in the Google Play Store, you might think the answer to the question of why people download apps would be something along the lines of, “Uh, because they want to?” But the reality is actually much more interesting.
As a budding app entrepreneur, a valid question at this point might be why you should care? The simple answer is something along the lines of, “Uh, because you want to?” But maybe that’s overly simplistic. A better reason is that you need to know what motivates your users. Out of three million apps on the two most popular platforms, how are you, someone looking for a mobile android app development company, who says to him or herself, “Self! I have an idea for an app,” expecting your app to stand out from a crowd that just keeps getting larger? You should also be asking yourself why you call yourself “Self” but I’ll leave that as a topic of discussion between you and your therapist.
You might be surprised to find out that 50% of apps are downloaded because they provide access to special or exclusive offers. 71% of users between the ages of thirteen and thirty-four have downloaded apps released by their favorite bands. (I’m still waiting on Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem to put something out. Especially if it provides access to special or exclusive offers.)
Thanks to a study by Yahoo (apparently studying things is what they do now) we know that the motivations of users to download an app can be summarized as:
They’re bored and are looking for something to do
Someone recommended an app to them
They’re kids
They want a different browser
They want to go shopping
So, what you need to do is find a kid who says to his or herself, “Self! I’m bored and I want a new browser on which to go shopping” and then another person who calls themselves “Self” to recommend your app to them. YOU get a Lambo! And YOU get a Lambo! Lambo’s for all!
Alas, if only it were that simple.
